2009 EXHIBITION SERIES
The Lakes Gallery at chi-lin
Meredith, NH
This is our biggest show of the season; please join us Saturday
to meet these wonderful artists:
"Five Easy Pieces,
"Three in Clay,"
& "Lauren Olitski Water Paintings"
open at the lakes gallery Saturday
August 8th from 5—7 p.m.
The three exhibits that open Saturday at the lakes gallery
at chi-lin offer something special for everyone—ceramic
sculpture, tea and tableware, brilliant Japanese koi and
landscapes in watercolors, lakescapes and meditative paintings
in acrylics and New England water vistas in oils—and
an opportunity to meet some very unique artists.
"Three in Clay" features the work of NH potters
and Educators, John Baymore, Jon Keenan, and Franz Nicolay.
John Baymore will not be able to attend the opening as
he is in Japan this summer where he was asked to lead a
group of international artists in building and firing a
new salt kiln at Kanayama. He is recognized worldwide as
a wood-firing studio potter, kiln builder, and teacher.
A special tour to visit his five chamber noborigama kiln
at his studio in Wilton, New Hampshire is planned in the
early fall when he returns as Adjunct Professor of Ceramics
at the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester. John
Keenan, Professor at Colby-Sawyer, was also in Japan earlier
this summer, and not only will be at the opening to discuss
the work of both artists there, but will also be part of
this fall's tour. Franz Nicolay, well known for his photography
as a teacher at the Holderness School, is making a return
to his beginning and will be exhibiting some very exciting
ceramic sculpture.
"Five Easy Pieces" will present five works—ranging
from very large to very small—by four well-established
painters, Janet Slom, Patricia Burson, Susan Wahlrab and
Michael Milburn. Janet, away in South Africa, her first
home, this August, is from Wesport, Connecticut. Her "Circle
of Life" pieces are mesmerizing and evocative. Patricia
Burson, a Boston artist, creates sensuous portraits of
water-side environments in soft, fluid oils. Susan Wahlrab
paints watercolors that are truly magical with layers and
layers of strokes that present enchanting worlds of woods
and lakes. Michael Milburn, a Newton, Mass artist, plays
with wondrous, brilliant colors in his watercolors of fish
and birds with a very Asian sensibility.
"Lauren Olitski Water Paintings" are all about
the lakes we live within, and pulse with soft energy and
colors. Daughter of our Jules Olitski, until very recently
a neighbor with his summer studio on Bear Island, Lauren
who makes her home in Marlborough, Vermont is a major artist
in her own right, and well admired both in New England
New York.
The public is cordially invited to attend
the opening on Saturday, August 8th, from 5—7 p.m., to discuss
the pieces with their creators. For additional information
and directions please call the gallery at 603-279-8663.
The hours are Tuesday—Saturday from 10—6 p.m.,
Sundays by chance or appointment from 1-4 p.m. The lakes
gallery is located on the corner of Main and Lake Street
in downtown Meredith.
